How do you perform special attacks?

In NieR: Automata, special attacks can be performed by pressing the R1 button along with one of the face buttons (like square, triangle, or circle). Each combination of R1 and a face button triggers a unique special attack move with varying effects and damage.

Learning Special Attacks:

In NieR: Automata, special attacks are powerful moves that can turn the tide of battle in your favor. To perform special attacks, you first need to unlock them by obtaining and equipping "Pod Programs." These Pod Programs are essentially special weapons that can be attached to your robotic companion, known as a "Pod." Pod Programs can be acquired throughout the game by progressing through the story, completing side quests, or purchasing them from vendors in the game world.

Equipping Pod Programs:

Once you have obtained a Pod Program, you can equip it by accessing the game's menu. Navigate to the section where you can customize your Pod, and select the Pod Program you want to equip from your inventory. Each Pod Program offers a unique special attack with different effects, ranging from offensive projectiles to defensive shields. Experiment with different Pod Programs to find the ones that best suit your playstyle and the situation you are facing in combat.

Executing Special Attacks:

With your Pod Program equipped, you can now unleash special attacks during combat. To trigger a special attack, you will need to press the corresponding button on your controller. The controls for executing special attacks may vary depending on your platform or the configuration you have set up in the game. Check the game's settings or control mapping to familiarize yourself with the specific button inputs for special attacks.

Timing and Combos:

Special attacks can often be integrated into your combat combos to create devastating sequences of moves. Experiment with different timings and combinations of regular attacks and special attacks to maximize their effectiveness. Some special attacks may have unique properties, such as area-of-effect damage or staggering enemies, which can be strategically used to control the battlefield and defeat tough foes.

Upgrade and Enhance:

As you progress through NieR: Automata, you will have the opportunity to upgrade your Pod Programs and enhance their capabilities. Investing resources into upgrading your Pod Programs can increase their damage output, reduce cooldown times, or unlock additional features. Keep an eye out for upgrade materials and visit upgrade vendors to make the most of your Pod Programs and unleash even more powerful special attacks.
